Are you discovering that it's challenging to manage your child's disruptive behaviors? Is your child continually acting out, having frequent tantrums, or acting aggressively? You and your child may benefit from parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) in Plano, TX.
Our therapists are well-versed in PCIT techniques. The goal of this type of therapy is to teach parents and caregivers the strategies they need to respond to these behaviors. Build a more positive connection with your child if you're struggling with some of these kinds of behaviors.
Fusion Family Consulting is proud to offer PCIT in Plano. Contact our office to learn more about our solutions and to book an appointment.
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a specialized treatment that focuses on improving the relationship between young children and their parents or caregivers. This evidence-based therapy is effective in addressing a variety of emotional and behavioral issues by enhancing the quality of interactions between parents and children. During PCIT sessions at Fusion Family Consulting, both parents and children are actively involved, working together with the therapist to develop healthier communication and stronger bonds. Our goal is to foster a supportive and nurturing environment that promotes positive behaviors and emotional well-being in children.
PCIT is broken up into two phases, with Child-Directed interaction (CDI) being the first. The goal of this phase is to increase positive communication and warmth by utilizing PRIDE skills. PRIDE, in this capacity, stands for:
Parents and caregivers are encouraged during this initial phase to decrease certain activities during play. These can include:
Once caregivers and parents master these skills, the therapy can transition to the next phase.
The second phase of the therapy, Parent Directed Interaction (PDI), focuses on assisting caregivers with managing their child's difficult behaviors while staying consistent and calm. Some of the things caregivers learn during this phase include:
Once parents and caregivers master the techniques in these two phases, they can graduate to therapy with a happier child.
PCIT is helpful when working with children between the ages of two and seven. These children are typically exhibiting behavioral problems at school and/or home. Some of the children who have benefited from PCIT have been diagnosed with the following conditions:
Many children diagnosed with these disorders are also dealing with symptoms of depression and anxiety. PCIT is an essential treatment option to support children with anxiety and depression.
PCIT can sometimes feel like play therapy, which makes it an approachable solution for families with young children. However, parents and caregivers provide intervention during sessions instead of the therapist. This allows for generalization of the skills between therapy sessions and when the appointments are over.
You can expect PCIT to last anywhere from 12 to 20 sessions. The length of treatment needed depends on the needs and goals of your family. Some families may need fewer than 12 appointments, while others may need additional sessions to continue to support their behaviors outside of the PCIT framework.
In addition to attending weekly sessions with your PCIT therapist, caregivers will need to complete an additional 5-10 minutes of PDI and CDI practice each day. The more often caregivers practice their new skills outside of therapy, the more likely they'll see faster results.
It can be overwhelming to try and find time during your day to get in extra PCIT practice. Your therapist will work with you to problem-solve and find manageable ways to set aside time.
Caregivers may also be required to complete weekly questionnaires about their child's emotions and behaviors. These questionnaires are intended to measure changes in the child's behavior. They can also help the therapist determine when the family is ready to graduate from therapy.
PCIT has been successfully used for decades to treat emotional outbursts and various behavior problems. This type of therapy strives to give caregivers and children an improved quality of life.
Some of the ways PCIT can enhance a child's life include:
PCIT can also benefit parents and caregivers as well. A few of these may include:
Caregivers and parents will feel empowered as they learn positive ways to improve their child's behavior. They'll be able to assist their child with their ability to comply with adult requests and respect rules.
